Royal Dirt Devil Vacuum Cleaner History
The first Royal vacuum cleaners were made in 1905 by the
P.A.Geier Company. They were started in the the founder's (Mr.Geier)
garage in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr.Geier made these vacuum
cleaners by hand.
In 1937, the first hand held vacuum cleaner was made by
Royal. It was called the "Royal Prince". In 1953 the
company was bought by the Walter E. Schott Organization. The new owners
changed the name of the company to the Royal Appliance Manufacturing
Company. The Schott family are the owners of the Cincinnati Reds.
In 1954 the company was purchased by some of some of the
employees of Royal. They were lead by Stan Erbor who. The
company succeeded and moved in 1969 to its present address in Highland
Heights, OH. Erbor was active in the company until his death
in 1981 at the age of 80.
After his death a small group of investors acquired the
company. The new investors brought in a new aggressive sales and
marketing strategy. The new strategy was a success growing sales from
$5 million in 1981 to close to $270 million in 1995.
In 1984, Royal introduced the Dirt Devil hand Vac, which
has become Royal's leading sub-brand. The Royal Dirt Devil soon
became the number one selling hand-held vacuum cleaner in the United
States. Royal has sold more than 17 million Dirt Devil Hand Vacs.
