Eco-Friendly Vacuum Cleaners

Nowadays folks are trying to be more consciencous about the environment. Buying a vacuum cleaner definitely can be eco-friendly. Instead of getting a new vacuum, consider a used one or fixing your old one.

What is the best eco-friendly vacuums? (source)

The best vacuums to buy from an eco-friendly standpoint? If you want to reduce your carbon footprint (i.e. reduce your use of plastics), try to find a vacuum with a metal casing. It will be heavier, but can be recycled for scrap when its lifespan is finished. Tristar is one brand that makes metal canister vacuums. Be aware, however, that they still use a lot of PVC in the units, and they outgas a very strong odour for quite some time after you bring them home.

If you are concerned about allergens, purchase a vacuum with HEPA filters and/or bags. Reduce your need for frequent vacuuming by removing all shoes and outer footwear at your doors when you come inside. This will make a huge difference in the amount of dust you track through your home. Try vacuuming less-trafficked areas less frequently. Many of my former clients could get away with once-monthly vacuuming in areas like bedrooms. This won’t work for you if allergens are a problem, however.

What should you consider? (source)

So here are 6 things to consider when searching for an eco-friendly vacuum cleaner:

1. Beware of gimmicks and stick to the basics: remember a vacuum is a canister with a motor!

2. Look for a vacuum with an 8 amp motor or at least power-saving mode.

3. If the vacuum has a filter, be sure it is washable and reusable.

4. If the vacuum takes dust bags, be sure they are made from paper that has not been plasticized or heavily treated with chemicals.

5. If you can’t afford a super high-end vacuum, look for one used on eBay.

6. Check out the manufacturer’s web site for replacement part availability.

Cleaning Your Car

Last week, we posted on cordless vacuum cleaners. One of the best uses of cordless vacuums is in cleaning your car.

(source) Cleaning the inside of your car can be a challenging task indeed. You will often find that dust and dirt from the outside can find its way into all those nooks and crannies which are hard to get to. This is why traditional vacuum cleaners, with all their cords and attachments, can be problematic when trying to clean the interior. Often you will find that the cord won’t allow you to reach the car from the nearest electrical outlet. All these problems however, can be solved by a car vacuum cleaner.

Typically, these car vacuums are handheld and run on batteries. This negates the need for an electrical cord restricting how far you can reach with the vacuum and their smaller size enables you to operate inside the car more effectively. While they are effective in cleaning you car, they are also a great tool to help you clean up those small messes that can occur around your home and without needing to pull out the bulker traditional vacuum.

Why should you use a cordless vacuum instead of say the vacuum at the car wash? Money and convenience. After a while it can get expensive popping quarters into a car wash vacuum cleaner, plus you have to drive there to use it. Now the car wash vacuums will have more powerful suction, so you will probably want to head over there once in a while but a good cordless should be able to handle the job.

Found this article the other day- what are your feelings or thoughts on it?

Every vacuum cleaner brand will probably claim to be using the best technology available. But the decision to buy the best home vacuum cleaners is entirely left up to you. With the many offers on the market from such brands as Dyson, Miele, Electrolux, and Sebo, it’s no wonder why many people can’t seem to find the perfect vacuum. Here is a list of some of the best home vacuum cleaners that you can choose from.

Eureka 4870HZ Boss SmartVac

One of the best rated vacuum cleaner products of all time, this Eureka upright vacuum is known for its sealed HEPA system, it’s Power Paw Turbo for vertical cleaning of stairs and upholstery, and its unique suction control feature that allows users to direct how much suction is needed for cleaning floors and carpets. A 12 Amp powerhouse of a vacuum, this may seem like a large vacuum but it’s definitely one that’s in charge.

Miele Capricorn S5980 Luna Silver Canister

Miele trademark logo is known for their quality products and their vacuum cleaner line up is no different. Their latest canister vacuum sports larger fiber bags than their previous vacuums. This means that it is more powerful and one won’t have to change the bags as often as in older models.

Fingertip controls allow for easier use and it also comes with an extra long cord. The keywords to describe this German inspiration: noise reduction. It’s quiet, sleek and gets the job done.

Dyson DC14 All-floor

Dyson is one of the bestselling brand in the US and in the UK. To that effect, the DC14 is probably one of their products that are most in demand at the moment. The all-floor model boasts of a bagless system that never loses suction, a 5-year warranty, and a guarantee that will satisfy those who have allergic reactions to the smallest of dust particles. Its lifetime HEPA filter and bagless feature are two of the reasons why this model is popular; neither of the two features has to be replaced.

Electrolux Oxygen3 HEPA Canister

This is ideal for homes with wall to wall carpeting or those with bare floors. Canister vacuums are fast becoming a good replacement for the gigantic uprights and the Oxygen3 shows why in both form and function. This model includes a new electronic low profile nozzle for bare floors, a full size powerhead for carpets and for cleaning on almost all surfaces. Fairly priced, this is one of the best home vacuum cleaners out in the market.

It is sold in standard, deluxe and supreme packages; each of the packages offers options that are best for your home.

Sebo Air Belt K3

Known for its durability, the K3 from Sebo offers quality and durability. A tough looking home device, the K3 is missing features that were found in the Sebo C series. However, the K series are the lightest vacuums that offer powerful cleaning abilities couples with noise-free operation. Sold with specialized on-board tools and a first class filtering system, this is one canister vacuum that should not be underestimated.

Canister vacuums are fast replacing the upright version. This simply means that the canister vacuum is quickly becoming the best home vacuum cleaners because they are light, portable. The bonus feature is found in the different configurations that the hose takes to be able to get dirt in the tightest of spaces. So for the best in home vacuums that are offered with fair prices, it is definitely recommended to make the change to canister vacuums.

Shop Vac Essentials

A shop vac can be a very handle piece of equipment in the home or shop. In a previous article we discussed the different types of shop vacs and some of their specs. In this post, we will cover the “essentials”.

Hose - Hose diameters will vary from model to model. A longer hose is recommended as it is more convenient.

Noise – Shop vacs make a lot of noise. It is recommended to get an add-on muffler to help quiet the shop vacs.

Filters – It is recommended to get a shop vac that comes with a HEPA filter, since wood dust is a carcinogen. ,

Water - Wet/dry vacs are great since the vac can act as a pump, which lets you hook up a hose to help remove water.

Tank – Check out the tank sizes that come with the models you are reviewing. Make sure you will be able to move and dump out a filled cannister.

Wheels -Four wheels are better than three.

Attachments – Again the more the better.

Cord Length – A long cord is a handy thing to have.

This does not cover every aspect of a shop vac, but this should be enough to get you thinking and asking questions.

Vacuum Articles For Your Review

Hope all had a great Thanksgiving. Did anyone brave Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

Now that the dust has settled, it is time to go shopping, calmly. Vacuum cleaners do make great gifts. As we have searched the web, we can across two articles that thought worth commenting on.

The first, How to Choose a Vacuum Cleaner is a nice article talking about what you need to consider when purchasing a vacuum cleaner.

“Even more important than amps and watts ratings are airflow (the most important of all) and sealed suction (listed on vacuum cleaner specifications as “water lift”). “

“An important, but often overlooked, element of cleaning ability is the capability of the vacuum cleaner to retain the soils, and especially the fine particulates, that it picks up.”

“The quality of your vacuum cleaner is also important and will determine whether your vacuum cleaner will be replaced in a year or two or will last for many years and even decades.”

The second article is  How To Buy Vacuum Cleaners Online Or Offline .

“When it comes to buying vacuum cleaners, it pays to do your research online and offline too. ”

“Always check and see how long the warranty is good for; the longer the better of course. You can save a lot of money buying vacuum cleaners online if you do some thorough research first. It’ll cost more buying a unit with a bag because you’ll be buying bags ongoing.”

“The highest priced upright models may carry every available feature; they may be true HEPA vacuums. Make sure the machine feels comfortable. Try assembling and taking apart the attachments before you buy.”

When shopping for a vacuum do some research, try them out, and take your time! Happy shopping!

What Are Robot Vacuum Cleaners?

The robot vacuum cleaner was invented by Electrolux and introduced into the consumer market in 2001. Soon after that, Roomba vacuums appeared as they perfected the cordless vacuum cleaner.

Robotic vacuums are extremely convenient rug and floor cleaners, but they do not have the suction and performance power of an upright or canister vacuum. They do not or cannot perform a deep cleaning of your carpet.

One way to look at the robotic vacuum cleaner is as a carpet sweep. They are powerful hands-free, battery charged, rug and floor sweepers, that have been designed to seek out and pick up the dirt, lint, sand and dust that lies on your floor and carpet surface.

These small vacuums were created to help out those with a busy life. Taking care of them is also very easy; filter and brush replacements when required; empty the dust bin after each use, and check the vacuum for trapped debris. After the room as been cleaned, the robotic vacuum cleaner will go back to the recharging station to charge its battery for the next time you need it.

Prices will vary too on these robot vacuums, you can find Roomba models these days for under $100 dollars. So if you looking for a legitimate cleaning solution, take a look at robotic vacuum cleaners -they are no gimmick.
